The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between skeletal
maturity stage of the hand-wrist and growth pattern of facial areas in normal occlusion.
The subjects consisted of 220 males, 244 females, total 464, ranging from 7 to 17 years
of age with normal occlusion.
Skeletal growth stage assessed on the hand-wrist by Fishman's method and
measurement of facial area was assessed on the cephalometric radiographs. The
measurements were analyzed statistically by SAS program.
The results were as follows :
1. The mean age and standard deviation of the skeletal maturity stage of the
hand-wrist were measured in normal occlusion.
2. Skeletal maturity stage kof the hand-wrist in girls occurred earlier than in boys.
3. The measurments of Ar-A, Go-Me, Ar-Pog, that indicate length of the upper and
lower jaws were increased(P<0.05) in accordance with skeletal maturation of the
hand-wrist and showed a high correaltion(0.68-0.85).
4. The maximum growth of upper and lower jaws occurred in SMI 5-6 stage in
males and in SMI 3-4 stage in females, coincident with maximum growth of height in
male and female.
The strong correlation between maturity of hand-wrist and development of jaws and
the maximum growth of upper and lower jaws coincident with maximum growth of
height suggest that hand-wrist might be used in estimating of facial development
